Our Uptown Family
How Rotary Club of Pune Uptown came into being
It is said that “Man is a social animal”… and so he prefers to stay in a society rather than staying alone. Society, today, could be described as… an interrelated system of social groups – ranging from the informal friendship groups to the most formal political, economical, educational and religious groups.
Even though there is an explosion of new contact media, everyday human to human relation has become a rare commodity. So a group or a club today is not a luxury but has become a necessity or a part of ones life. It gives the feeling of sharing and caring for one another. Through these groups self development and understanding of each other could be attained.
Rotary club, essentially, is one such group of people who are motivated and dedicated to the feeling of fellowship. As suggested in the name itself Rotary means that which rotates… that which is not static or stationary. The Rotary movement is on the go and one Rotary group or the club forms another group or club of like minded people, spreading the message of ‘Service above Self’.
In this way Rotary Club of Poona Midtown formed our club… Rotary Club of Pune Uptown on 8th April, 1991.
Considering the extensive growth of the city of Pune Rotary Club of Poona Midtown felt the need of one more club in the vicinity of their territory. The then District Governor, Dr. Mukund Abhyankar entrusted the work of exploring the possibilities of starting a new club to Rtn Ashok N. Baser, the then President of Rotary Club of Poona Midtown. He and PP Rtn Ramesh Bendre carried out and submitted the survey report to the District Governor. The Governor evaluated the said report carefully and found it favourable and feasible. Governor, then appointed Rtn PP Ramesh Bendre as G.S.R. and requested him to form the new club.
Extensive work done by Rtn PP Ramesh gave the deserved success. He held the first meeting of the strong contingent of 47 members of diverse classifications. This new club was named as Rotary Club of Pune Uptown.
The proposal of this new Rotary Club of Pune Uptown was sent to the District Governor Rtn Mukund Abhyankar who gave provisional admittance to the new club on 15th March, 1991.
The provisional Rotary Club of Pune Uptown was then formally admitted on the 8th April, 1991 by Rotary International. Charter Presentation Ceremony took place on 29th May, 1991. The club received the Charter at the hands of the District Governor Rtn Dr. Mukund Abhyankar. Rtn PP Marutrao Jadhav of Rotary Club of Poona Midtown was appointed as the Charter President and Rtn. Rajeev Shah became the first Secretary of the club On the Charter Presentation Day 47 members including 5 lady Rotarians received Charter Membership Pins at the hands of the Governor.
Rtn PP Marutrao Jadhav proved himself and started the club activities right from the word go. He along with Rtn Ashok Baser and Rtn Vinod Shah was instrumental in forming the club trust in the first year of the club’s existence.
Rtn PP Marutrao laid the foundation before he actually started building the club by striving himself single handedly in completing many projects in all the avenues of service.
Rtn President Anil Tambe continued the good work during the next Rotary year. The club now has completed 16 years of service to the community, and the youth. As experts in their own fields of classification the Rotarian members of our club has helped the vocations and businesses and have successfully implanted the four way test among the business community. Mutthibhar Anaj, Chirag Award, Vocational Excellence Award, Jayaram Shiledar Natya Sangeet Competition... are the on going projects.
In the first year itself PP Marutrao Jadhav established a rural wing of the club (Rotary Community Corps: R.C.C.) in village Manerwadi, at the foot of Sinhgad Mountain Fort. Every president has made his mark by helping the village in different ways from adding classrooms to the school, Creating the school play ground, providing drinking water reservoir, donating toilet blocks to every house, providing smokeless choolhas, donating playground equipment, motivating villagers to stay away from drinking habits, various medical check ups, tree plantations, vocational guidance etc. No wonder the village was chosen as ‘Adarsh Gram’ under a scheme by Shri Anna Hazare.
